The Shōsōin is a treasure house located north of Tōdai-ji Temple, safeguarding items connected to the emperor from 1,300 years ago. Annually, during the Shōsōin Exhibition, a selection of these treasures is made available to the public as part of an inspection and airing process. Within the Shōsōin, over 9,000 precious artifacts are preserved, with approximately 60 carefully chosen pieces displayed each year. Now in its 76th year, the exhibition still holds many treasures yet to be revealed.
Every year, the anticipation of which treasures will be unveiled for the first time elevates this event to a significant cultural highlight in Nara, drawing numerous visitors. For those considering a journey to Japan in the autumn, attending this exhibition is highly recommended. It showcases artifacts over a millennium old, exquisitely preserved, that made their way to Japan via the Silk Road. Engaging with these artworks, crafted with techniques from a myriad of countries, provides an unparalleled experience unmatched elsewhere.
Tickets must be purchased in advance with a specified date and time. Ticket sales begin on September 6th (Friday) at 10:00 AM.
