Today, let me introduce you to the rich and unique history of Nara .
This region holds a significant place in Japan’s history, as it is where the country’s first emperor ascended the throne in 660 BC, marking the birth of Japan. Around 1,300 years ago, Japan’s first capital city was established here, modeled after the Tang Dynasty capital in China. As the eastern terminus of the Silk Road, Nara became a hub for foreign innovations, which helped shape and advance Japan’s culture and industries.
Buddhism is one of the many cultural elements that came to Japan from abroad. From tangible objects to intangible philosophies, a wide range of ideas and practices were introduced from foreign lands.

The fusion and coexistence of foreign and native cultures is a defining characteristic of Japan’s cultural evolution. For example, Shinto, Japan’s indigenous religion, has long revered the divine in all things. When Buddhism, a foreign religion, arrived, the two belief systems did not clash but instead formed a harmonious relationship without conflict. I believe this coexistence reflects the peaceful and cooperative nature of the Japanese people. Even today, Japan is recognized as a safe country, and I think this stems from Shinto’s philosophy of living in harmony with all things, which underpins the nation’s emphasis on peace and mutual respect.

Nara’s unique cultural heritage remains largely intact, as the region was spared from major conflicts throughout history. Many of the original buildings from when Nara first became Japan’s capital, along with traditional festivals that began over a millennium ago, continue to this day. One such example is the Omizutori ceremony at Tōdai-ji Temple, held annually in March. In 2025, it will mark its 1,274th occurrence.
